We aren’t fans of overpromising and underdelivering so we will preface this description of 28HKS by saying that this bar isn’t an undiscovered gem but it just takes a little bit of looking. It’s easy to keep walking past if you don’t know where to look but trust us when we say that a little searching is worth the experience. 28HKS is famously known for its innovative drink lists. Paint the town red this weekend by hopping into the eerily designed Operation Dagger. If you’re one for mystery, this bar is will be your poison for the evening. Located in a nondescript building with illegible scrawl, it will certainly take a bit of digging to find. Although the entrance is on the dingy side, don’t let it fool you. The interior, albeit mysterious, is designed minimally with edgy industrial type decor. The first thing you’ll notice is the light bulb installation that seems to be suspended from the ceiling. It’s an artwork in and of itself. The menu isn’t lengthy, but it doesn’t need to be when the offerings are that good. Enjoy pickings of snacks alongside stellar cocktails. To add to the mystery, all the hooches on the shelves don’t have their conventional labels. Instead, they are bottled into medicinal-like casings with coded labels known only to the bartender. In the same way, the menu only lists flavour profiles of the drinks which allows for a sensory experience without any prejudice. If you want to impress someone, don’t look any further.

This bar is very aptly named as it’s definitely pocket-sized. The bar can only seat 10 patrons at a time and you’ll only know you’ve found the right place when you come across a white unassuming doorway with a lamp above it. The doorway can be found via an alleyway off of its sibling, Crackerjack. Once you navigate your way inside the bar, you’ll be welcomed into a cozy cave with a backlit wall of bottles. The bar has introduced a rotating menu where the drink offerings are refreshed every six months. So, for all the picky drinkers, you’ll never go bored. But for anyone who has found a staple, don’t fret, the classics stay year-round

As mythical as the name itself, The Secret Mermaid definitely goes under the radar but not for the reasons you think. This watering hole boasts a library of booze, mainly spirits. By day, it dresses itself as a Japanese salad bar and by night, turns into a destination cocktail bar. Although hidden in plain sight, if you find this place after 5 PM, be prepared to experience a selection of drinks that’ll incorporate things that seem a little foreign in a drink. I mean, beetroot in your cocktail? Yes, you read that right. If you’re after a new experience, this bar will give it and then some. Find cocktails on the menu with fruit and vegetables because they are certainly finding innovative ways to feed you your five-a-day.

This one will take you by surprise because this bar is a manicure/pedicure salon by day. Yes, you read that right. This bar isn’t hidden as such, but you just wouldn’t expect a salon to be converted into a bar. But are we complaining? Not when the drinks are stellar (and the whole theme, too!). By night, this salon gives way to a bar inspired by the novel of Jekyll and Hyde. For the fans of this gothic novel, the bar takes on the whole good and bad inspiration with their drink selection. Centred around the idea of naughty and nice wherein the drinks are inspired by the seven deadly sins. However, we can confirm that the flavour profile is all Mr Jekyll (i.e. delicious). Known for their gin-based drinks, this bar is washed with wood and concrete: a beautiful blend of warm minimalism.

Stationed right next to Uma Uma Ramen, this bar takes you into a basement lair filled with seasonally inspired drinks. Rumour has it that this place doesn’t have a menu, which gives you free rein to order whatever tickles your fancy. The drinks bring out native flavours and bring a whole new hand of cards to the table. Sweet potato cocktail, anyone? Maybe a Soybean milk-based drink? Don’t turn your head just yet, it hasn’t been given the title of one of Singapore’s trendiest bars for no reason.

Before we get any further, let’s just say this bar isn’t really hidden given that it’s in the Marriott. But why does it make it to our list? Because you won’t find the drinks they make here anywhere else. Yes, it’s just that unique (and novel). The Other Room offers a crafted cocktail menu that pays homage to classic flavours with a bold twist. This bar takes spirits from across the world and ages it in barrels that housed other types of alcohol. This careful aging results in a unique flavour of spirits you won’t be able to taste anywhere else. With a 50-page menu, you might feel dizzy, but no two visits to the Other Room are the same, so you’ll always have a new experience to talk about when you leave.

This coffee-serving house transforms into a speakeasy. Look for the Dapper Coffee sign above a white door before you go up a narrow staircase into what looks like a set from the Great Gatsby. The inspiration draws from the 1920’s era and it’s just as cozy. Old world charm meets gastro pub-style decor at The Spiffy Dapper. Enjoy a weeknight drink at this quirky but moodily lit bar. With an array of classic and unique cocktails, there’s one to please even the toughest of critics.

This one isn’t hidden, per se, but the hut-laden rooftop bar gives you all the privacy you want. Get comfy in one the teepee huts amidst lush fauna and enjoy a stunning view of Singapore’s impressive skyline. Situated 39-storeys high on the Andaz, this bar does many things right, but namely, it’s the drinks and space. Space, you ask? Yes, space. This rooftop bar is massive, with trees and cobble paths dotting around the bar. It’s a great break from the concrete jungle just below you. The menu makes plenty of use of fresh herbs and garden varieties to spice up the cocktails. If you haven’t gotten a date, find one and get settled in because it’s bound to be a goodun.

Singapore is no stranger to marrying innovation, old school themes and its own roots into the foodie culture. There’s always a new place to visit during your adventures on the island. Whether you’re here for business, travel or you’re a local, step into the dark side and enjoy the hidden bars. Be it underground or 39 floors up, it’ll be a novel experience you’ll want a repeat of.
